Axiem Pays it Forward

12/3/2015

Maryann Farrugia, Tracy Farrugia and Kai Mijares embarked on a charity activity to ‘pay it forward’ on behalf of Axiem Corporation in Payatas, Quezon City, Philippines on March 12, 2015.

Quezon City is one of the most densely populated areas of urban Manila. Payatas is a barangay i.e. village/ district located in the city, where one of the largest open dumpsites in the Philippines can be found. Thousands of families reside in the area and approx. 40% of adults are unemployed. For many of these families, their only source of income is derived from the dumpsite. Groups of 'garbage pickers' or scavengers scatter around the dumpsite to gather recyclable waste that they can exchange for cash through junk shops nearby.

Maryann, Tracy, and Kai were accompanied by the barangay officials to conduct their charity activity. The local children lined the streets patiently waiting for food and drink. Approximately 150 children, many barefoot and some who were obviously malnourished, received snacks and demonstrated their appreciation with smiles.

“It was a really humbling experience. It doesnt take much to make a kids day” said Maryann sharing her experience. “This definitely won’t be the last outreach activity that we will conduct.  This kind of activity allows us an opportunity to give back to a country that gives us so much. We should be socially aware of the reality of these families and do something proactively about it,” she added.

Axiem Corporation strives to bring awareness to the community through charity programs that can change a kid’s life even just for a day. Please don't hesitate to contact us on +632 956 4429 if you want to participate or donate to this program.
